This year, North Carolina resident and cancer survivor Louan Gideon got a unique gift and a special celebration for her birthday. According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, a local nonprofit helped her get cosmetic tattoos after a breast reconstruction, an event that she celebrated with Marla Maples and Tiffany Trump.
Gideon was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, after which she underwent a bilateral mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery. Maples, her friend since they met in church more than two decades ago, recently showed up with daughter Tiffany to cheer Gideon on as she had areolae tattooed on her resculpted chest.
The former wife of real estate and media mogul Donald Trump, Maples told the newspaper that she couldn't believe it when she heard that her friend had cancer.
"It was really shocking when we first heard that she had cancer because she was the first person I really knew and was close to who had gotten that diagnosis," she said to the news source.
Each year, more than 207,000 U.S. women receive such a diagnosis, according to the National Cancer Institute.
