Reconstructions may help cancer survivors'' self-esteem, bedroom confidence

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

Getting breast reconstruction surgery is rarely something that each woman who has overcome breast cancer decides on her own. Often, a survivor consults with her friends, family and, particularly, her partner.

Though results may vary, many women report feeling higher self-esteem and having an improved self-image after undergoing reconstructive surgery.

This attitude can help these women feel rejuvenated and desirable, which may be especially important for those who suffer the aftereffects of chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that cancer survivors often report experiencing physical symptoms like joint aches, headaches, dryness or hot flashes during intimate moments.

These women do not suffer higher rates of depression or have a lower overall quality of life. Nevertheless, researchers warned that these survivors should be given counseling or treatments for their symptoms.

A similar report, appearing in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, estimated that one-third of breast cancer survivors experience hormone fluctuations, dryness or relationship troubles after treatment, though a portion of these were found to be temporary.
