Online bridal store raises money for women with breast cancer

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

While plenty of women have insurance that partially or fully covers breast reconstructions, some cancer survivors do not have the luck to have coverage for such a self-esteem-enhancing surgery. However, an online bridal retailer is hoping to change that, one person at a time.

Advantage Bridal, an online retailer of more than 21,000 made-to-order wedding gowns, shoes and even t-shirts, has lately begun making products for a number of non-profits that raise funds for women with cancer.

The virtual store has begun making apparel, much of it themed with pink ribbons, for FORCE: Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered, 2B Restored and Breastoration. The latter two non-profits were only recently incorporated in California and Louisiana, respectively.

Advantage Bridal owner Sandy Keller had good reason to turn her attention to helping women regain their breasts after cancer.

"I lost my mother to breast cancer when she was only 48," Keller said, adding that she herself was diagnosed early, allowing her to dodge cancer and receive a breast reconstruction from one of the top plastic surgery teams in the U.S.

Her company's contributions to fund-raising will help less fortunate women get the same sort of treatment.
