Breast reconstruction expert elected head of biomaterials society
Tuesday, July 19, 2011
A professor of bioengineering and expert on breast reconstruction has recently been elected as
the president of the Clemson University's Society for Biomaterials, the oldest American
organization in the field.
Karen Burg, who has conducted years of research on tissue engineering for women who have had mastectomies, currently holds
11 patents on polymers and other substances that are being used to regenerate or replace tissue removed as a result of breast
Burg was previously profiled by North Carolina (NC) State University's Engineering News for creating biodegradable beads - each
of which was less than 1 millimeter across - that could be coated with viable adult stem cells and injected as part of an alternative
form of breast reconstruction.
She told the news source that the possibilities that biomaterials hold for advancing breast reconstruction seem limitless.
"I know so many women that have had breast cancer," Burg told the NC State source. "Women at the university, in my own family -
all over. They are extremely excited about the possibilities."
Burg was chosen as one of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's 100 Top Young Innovators of 2003. Today, her work is
funded by the Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation.
