What do plastic surgeons think of performing breast reconstructions?

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

You may be curious about breast reconstruction (BR), or happy that you or someone you know opted for one after a mastectomy, but have you ever wondered how the plastic surgeons who preform them feel? A team of researchers recently conducted a survey to find out.

Their results, which they published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, indicate that 90 percent of healthcare professionals who perform BRs feel a sense of reward and satisfaction knowing that they are helping women recover from a terrible experience.

Even more respondents said that they enjoy the technical aspects of BRs, which can be quite challenging given the sheer number of options available to women who have had mastectomies.

Besides typical silicone implants, a BR can involve tissue grafting, fat injections and stem cell therapy, as well as nipple and areola reconstructions.

The study also determined that one of the biggest factors standing in the way of many BRs is a lack of insurance coverage. Researchers concluded that healthcare officials and breast cancer advocates should push for public initiatives that make BRs more available and affordable for cancer survivors.

As of 2008, the National Cancer Institute estimates that more than 2.6 million American women either had or had overcome breast cancer.
