Considering the various career paths that plastic surgeons can take, it may be
surprising to discover that so many end up specializing in breast reconstruction
A recent article on a women's website called EmpowHer noted that some plastic
surgeons choose this career path based on a deep-seated belief that cancer survivors deserve the option to have
procedures that recreate their original breast tissue.
The news source profiled Dr. Loren Eskenazi and her colleagues at San Francisco's surgical center, Women's Plastic
Surgery. In addition to performing augmentations and congenital deformity corrections, many doctors at the facility do
breast reconstructions because, as their website states, they know where women are coming from when it comes to
issues of self-image.
"In addition to being diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening disease, [a woman] also must face the loss of her
breast, which for many women conjures up thoughts such as disfigurement and loss of sexuality," the center's
website states, adding that "this does not need to be the case."
Breast reconstruction is becoming more and more common. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates that
more than 57,000 such operations are performed each year in the U.S.
