Breast health center offers array of options to cancer survivors

For women who have had or are considering a mastectomy to treat breast cancer,
the Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York, offers information, counseling
services, medical imaging and breast reconstructions.
The institute's Center for Breast Health (CBH) is in the process of moving to an
office building next to the hospital, where it will be fully operational as of June or July, according to MDNews.
Center Director Karen Karsif told the news organization that what helped her understand that she had chosen the
right medical field was an experience she had more than a decade ago. After giving a 26-year-old woman
chemotherapy, a mastectomy and a breast reconstruction, Karsif didn't hear from the patient for years.
Then, during a checkup eight years later, the woman revealed that she was expecting a child.
"I started crying when I saw how happy the young woman was," Karsif told the website. "As difficult as it is to see
patients battle breast cancer, it's wonderful to help them through the journey and see them emerge happy."
Today, Karsif directs the CBH, where all patients have a nurse with them during procedures to explain what is
happening. They also have access to prostheses, wigs, turbans and special bras in the center's gift shop, according
to the CBH's official website.
