California cancer survivor organizes race for women like her

The discovery of breast cancer can be devastating, particularly if the disease is relatively advanced or the tumor itself is quite large. California resident Angela Robinson certainly felt overwhelmed when a mammogram revealed a softball-sized growth in her breast.

She told the San Juan Capistrano Patch that her diagnosis was especially surprising because she was careful to have yearly breast health checkups. However, physicians explained that the tumor could have gone unnoticed for up to a decade.

Doctors told Robinson that she had Stage III breast cancer, meaning the disease had spread to distant parts of her body. She recalled being given a 20 percent chance of survival.

This prognosis is more or less in line with the average five-year survival rate quoted by the National Cancer Institute for metastasized breast carcinomas: 23 percent.

Soon thereafter, the treatment process moved rather fast for Robinson. She explained to the news source that within 10 months, she'd had chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy, a breast reconstruction and radiation treatment.

Today, the fully recovered mother of two is happy, healthy and energetic. Robinson is coordinating her local Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which will take place this month, the news source concluded.
