National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day to raise awareness for cancer survivors

Thursday, May 31, 2012

There are a lot of questions breast cancer patients are sure to have before, during and after diagnosis and treatment. As a result, National Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day has been declared to help post-mastectomy patients understand how the breast reconstruction process works.

A fall release

The first annual BRA Day will be held Oct.17 with more than 20 other countries participating to get the word out to past and present breast cancer sufferers about their options. A recent study of survivors revealed that about 70 percent aren't aware of their breast reconstruction options, potentially leading to a reduced number of women getting the full spectrum of treatment to which they're entitled.

Spearheading the campaign is singer and songwriter Jewel, an outspoken advocate of women's breast cancer rights. She will be headlining a concert on Oct. 29 in New Orleans to raise money for BRA Day and provide educational resources for breast reconstruction education. The funds will be given to The Plastic Surgery Foundation for both local and national dissemination.

Building BRA foundations

The Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons (CSPS) and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF), along with other event organizers and sponsors, are ongoing leaders in the fight to provide cancer survivors with educational and support events as they move through difficult times in their lives. To further the campaign, mastectomy and post-reconstruction patients will be posing for a large-scale bus advertisement for the event and also to highlight the fight of breast cancer patients everywhere.

The CSPS and CBCF have previously put together flash mobs, seminars and similar events to encourage public awareness as well as that of potential surgical candidates. By increasing visibility, the BRA campaign strives to make breast reconstruction more recognized and accepted by the general public.
